God through Elisha told the woman to borrow empty vessels and to pour the oil from her jar into them. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones." "Then he said, "Go borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors - empty vessels do not gather just a few. However, this jar of oil was enough for God to bring deliverance to her. The only that was left was this jar of oil. There was no table, no beds, no cooking utensils. Obviously in her effort to get rid of the debt she sold everything. There was nothing in her house but a jar of oil. "and she said "your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil." Verse 2 gives us the reply of the woman to Elisha's question: In contrast, his reply shows that he was ready to help in any way he could. Nevertheless, this does not mean that he was not available to help her. He certainly did not have a solution to her problem, before God provided the miraculous solution that we will read in a moment. Also see that Elisha did not try to get rid of her because the problem was "too difficult". What counted now was not the past but that in the present time she needed immediate support and to find it she sought the Lord. However, the point now was not what had happened. You certainly do not arrive at this point from the one day to the other and without in the meantime handling many things wrongly. In my personal opinion, there must have been much time before the widow or her husband reached the stage of insolvency. Elisha was there ready to help this widow. "So Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" Having seen what the widow said to Elisha let's now see what Elisha replied to her: Evidently, she had determined to FIGHT this difficulty and to fight it WITH GOD. Obviously, the man that this woman believed that could help her was Elisha, the man of God 1. he was on the way) you do not go but to those who you know that can help you. Really, when the time is so limited ("the creditor was coming" imperfect i.e. Of course, her choice to run in this critical time to the man of God was not accidental. To face this problem she cried out to Elisha, the man of God. From this we can easily understand the emergency of the situation: the woman because of an unpaid debt was about to lose her two sons. As a result, the creditor was coming to take her two sons to be his slaves. Unfortunately, her husband died leaving to his family a debt that they could not afford. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves."Īccording to the passage, this woman was the wife of a man that feared, deeply revered, the Lord. "A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. 2 Kings 4:1 tells us about this woman and a great problem she faced, after the death of her husband. The first of the two cases that will be examined in this study regards a widow and her two sons. In both cases our focus will be on the ability of God to deliver those who seek Him from any problem they may have.Ģ Kings 4:1-7: Elisha, the widow with the two sons. He walked very powerfully with the Lord and from the many miracles that God did through him, we will consider in this study only two of them. Elisha was a follower of Elijah, whose ministry he succeeded (see 2 Kings 2). One of the men of God to whom a lot of space is given in God's Word is Elisha. 2 Kings 4:1-38 Elisha, the widow and the Shunamite woman
